I have been so busy because I am going to be moving back to 4th grade next year and on top of that my sweet daddy passed away on January 3rd and that has been so hard on me that I haven't been too focused on much of anything except how much I miss him. I have to say that something very positive has come from my sweet daddy going Home. I have found myself being drawn closer to my God. I have created a new blog where I will be hosting my very first Bible study based on Renee Swope's book A Confident Heart. Please feel free to hop on over to my new blog and join us for our Bible study that begins on April 15th.<br />

This is such a crazy time of year I don't seem to have time for much of anything let alone blogging. I have had a rough beginning to the school year and I feel like I am finally getting my groove back :-) I have been introduced to Whole Brain Teaching and I am in LOVE!!! I just started implementing it into my classroom last Thursday and my kids have responded SO well! I love how positive it is! I would love to hear how many of you have implemented this into your classrooms as well as how you are implementing it. Would love to hear any suggestions or pointers you may have to share!<br />
<br />
I am also super excited that my sweet honey hubby is getting me a Cricut machine for Christmas along with some cartridges! I am NOT a scrapbooker so this is for my classroom! I am super excited because we do monthly name plates in the hall for our monthly family projects and I can't wait to use it to make super cute name plates for my hall displays!! I also want to use it to make some games. I am not very familiar with the machine and what all it can do so I would LOVE to hear about some ways you all use your Cricuts in your classrooms! I would also love to hear any cartridge suggestions you might have! Tell me what your most used cartridges are and how you use them!<br />
<br />
Well that's all I have for today. I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend! Have a great Monday tomorrow!Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-78272702217605017852012-10-08T16:32:00.000-07:002012-10-08T16:32:00.213-07:00Counting blessings while time fliesWow, It has been a while since I last posted. I have literally had no time to blog. Just a heads up, this blog post is not going to be much about teaching today. My life has been a serious roller coaster ride over the last few months and I am going to use my blog to vent, praise, and brag a little today :-)<br />
<br />
If you have been following me for a while then you are aware that back in March my sweet Daddy, who is in advanced stages of Alzheimer's Disease, fell down the front steps at his home and broke his hip. He had to be hospitalized and have surgery to replace part of his hip. He then had to be placed in a nursing home for rehabilitation, during this time we came to realize that his wife (not my mother - my mother passed away 20 years ago) was not taking care of him the way she had lead us all to believe. She was elderly herself, 9 years older than my dad actually which means she was in her late 80's. I ended up taking over responsibility for his healthcare by becoming his healthcare surrogate. I am the youngest of 4 kids but I am the one closest to my dad so my brothers and sister decided that I would be the best person to be in that position. It has been a very difficult position to be in but I have a great deal of support from my siblings. Anyway, we decided that my dad needed to be placed in a nursing home on a permanent basis. His health was declining more and more every day.<br />
<br />
In May we moved him to a nursing home closer to me and he has been there ever since. About 6 weeks ago I received a phone call from the social worker at the facility, she said that my dad was not eating or drinking and that he was considered malnourished and dehydrated. I had to decide whether or not to place him on a feeding tube. I discussed it with my siblings and we decided not to do the feeding tube because we knew that our father has a living will that says he doesn't want those types of things. So I told the social worker no and she informed me that we would then have to turn his care over to Hospice for Adult Failure to Thrive. That was a difficult day. Putting my Dad in hospice felt like I was giving up. It was hard but I did it.<br />
<br />
Then about 3 weeks ago my brother went to see my dad and he found a HUGE wound on my dad's elbow, I had been to see him 2 days earlier and it wasn't there. My brother pointed it out to the nurse and she immediately called the doctor. They put him on antibiotics and put antibiotic ointment on it and wrapped it. The next day I received a phone call from the doctor and he told me that he had looked at my father's wound and he was 100% convinced that it was an ulcerated tumor - basically a skin cancer tumor that has been growing under his skin and then finally burst through causing the huge icky wound. He asked me if I wanted to send him to an oncologist to "officially" diagnose it and find out about treatment options. I told him no, because even if it was cancer I was not going to put my frail elderly father through chemotherapy. He wouldn't know what was going on, all he would know was he felt awful! The whole reason we put him on Hospice was to keep him pain free and comfortable and chemotherapy would not do either of those things. Again another very difficult decision but one that I had to make.<br />
<br />
Things started to calm down and then, a couple Sunday's ago my brother called me and told me that my dad's wife had passed away. That was the only time I was thankful for my dad's Alzheimer's because he would have been very upset if he had understood she was gone.<br />
<br />
It seemed to me like my life was on a downward spiral I hated my job, I was constantly worried about my dad and I spent a lot of time crying and praying. I lived (and still do) by a part of the Bible that my mother always told me (which are also lyrics of a song now) "He said 'I won't give you more than you can take' He might let you bend but He won't let you break" and "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength" I knew that if God had started all this in my life He would be with me through it all. It seemed like every time something good would happen 2 things bad would follow it.<br />
<br />
All that started changing though earlier last week when I got a phone call from my dad's doctor. He told me that the wound on my dad's elbow - that was supposedly cancer - was completely healed! The wound was completely gone! Then on Thursday this past week I got another phone call, it was from my dad's nurse, she said that the doctor had come to see him again and that he had his medication changed. She said that instead of receiving potassium twice a day he would only have it once a day. I asked what that meant and he said it meant he was getting better with his nourishment and hydration.<br />
<br />
This past weekend I thought was going to be another blah weekend with things not going great! I had to replace my son's broken iPhone so we went to the cell store and I had looked online and was fully expecting to pay $350 to replace his phone, plus another $120 to replace my Otterbox case and buy a new one for my son's replacement phone ($60 for a case!!!! Don't get me started). Well the rep at the store looked at my account and said "Yeah we can do a replacement for his phone for $350 OR we can do an upgrade on YOUR phone and you can get an iPhone 4S for $99 and then give him your iPhone 4" I jumped right on that deal because I may only teach Kindergarten but I know paying $99 is way better than paying $350 plus I got to upgrade MY phone :-) I also mentioned that I needed to get 2 new cases. Well she starts talking to my husband and I about switching out cable service from Brighthouse to AT&T U-Verse and when my husband was hesitating she said "OK, if you sign up today I'll give you this package (which was more channels than we currently have for $50 a month less), as well as a $100 credit which will pay for the iPhone upgrade, AND I'll give you one of the cases for free!" So we signed up for it!! So in essence I got my phone and $60 OtterBox case for free, my son got his phone for free since it was my old phone, and we only paid for his OtterBox case, plus we are going to be saving $50 a month on our cable/internet/phone bill! Score 1for us!!! It was AWESOME!! I was really excited about that deal. But wait there's more...<br />
<br />
On Sunday I went to see my dad, usually when I see him we just go in get him and take him to the courtyard and I don't get much of a chance to talk to his nurses. Well when we got there it was lunch time so I went and sat with him while his CNA fed him, his nurse came in and she said to me "I can not believe the changes that have come over him in the last couple weeks, ALL of his wounds have healed and he has started eating a LOT." His CNA said that he had eaten his entire breakfast the last few days, and that he had eaten the majority of his lunch and dinner on those days as well. I watched her as she fed him and he ate about 3/4 of his lunch where a couple weeks ago he would have taken 2 bites and then refused to eat anymore. His nurse went on to tell me "In the 13 years I have been nursing I have NEVER seen anyone turn around like this! He is going eat himself right out of Hospice!" I am so happy that he is doing well! <br />
<br />
I'm not done yet there's more... (I sound like one of those As Seen on TV people) On the way home from visiting my dad, my husband and I were discussing when we would be able to take another trip to California to see his daughter (my step-daughter) and our granddaughters. We wanted to be able to take our 2 sons as well. I texted my boys and asked them if we planned a trip to California to see their sister would they like to come along - they haven't seen her in over 10 years and they have never met their nieces - they both of course said YES! We were trying to decide between Thanksgiving break, spring break or next summer. My oldest son said that the only time he could go was if we went before January because he begins the police academy in January. That pretty much settled it, we would be going for Thanksgiving! We are all SO excited! It is so exciting to have something to look forward to!! My husband and I went in June of 2011 and it was the first time we met our granddaughters and it was the first time we had seen his daughter in about 10 years as well. We had gotten a great deal with Southwest the last time we went so I went to the Southwest website to search flight prices. I also went to a couple of those travel websites to see if Southwest had the best deal, they had the best fare - it would have been $2200 for the 4 of us with 2 stops each way. I decided to wait until Monday to buy the tickets, not sure why but something told me to wait. Then around 9:00 last night I was watching TV in my bed and I was playing with my new phone and saw that there was an app for Kayak, so I opened it up and I put in our travel info and hit search - The first thing that popped up was American Airlines and it said $1404 and I thought "Oh I must not have put "round trip" this must be the price of 4 one way tickets. So I pulled out my computer and went to the American Airlines website and put in the info and it came up again! It WAS round trip and it was only 1 stop each way!!! I couldn't believe it!! I found our tickets for $800 cheaper and for a better flight. Even with the baggage charge that AA has that Southwest doesn't it still came out to be $650 - $700 cheaper (depending on how many suitcases I need LOL) Plus it is a more direct flight. The southwest flight took us from Orlando to St. Louis, then to Vegas, then to Sacramento! This flight we go from Orlando to Dallas/Fort Worth and then to Sacramento and we have the exact same path coming home! I am SOOOOO excited that I waited and found such a great fare! I also got to pick our seats so no worries about making sure we are all together.<br />
My step-daughter is SO excited that we are coming and we couldn't be happier to be spending Thanksgiving with her and her family. My boys (19 and 22 years old) have never flown before so they are both super psyched about that and seeing their sister. The only thing that could make this better would be if our daughter would be able to come but she is practically married and has 2 families, she spent Thanksgiving with us last year so This year they can go to his family's and she won't have to feel guilty.<br />
<br />
Finally, after such an awesome weekend I thought, it can't get any better, but I was wrong! I woke up this morning to an email saying that my DonorsChoose project had been funded!!! I am getting 2 iPod Touchs for my classroom!!!! I am SOOOOOOO psyched and so happy right now. I am trying really hard to enjoy it and not worry that something bad will happen LOL<br />
<br />
Sorry to have rambled on and on and provided nothing of real educational value.Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-45655021375389050212012-08-25T12:42:00.000-07:002012-08-25T12:42:18.399-07:00I'm back!!Wow I can't believe it has been almost a month since my last post. I have been so busy with my father and adjusting to my new school, my new team, and being back in kindergarten. We just completed our first week of school and it was a good but stressful week. I have 17 littles and they are a challenging group. I have 11 boys and 6 girls. 6 of my littles just turned 5 and one of them is actually turning 5 today so I have a young class and it definately shows. <br />
<br />
I have been working hard to adjust to a new school, new team, and new principal. My principal has requirements that I have never had before so it has been interesting to find ways to accomodate. For example our kiddos have 3 or 4 workbooks they use throughout the day, those workbooks cannot be in their cubbies, they must be within reach of the students so that no teaching time is wasted passing out or going to get their workbooks. We are required to have a bin on the table or chair pockets to hold their workbooks. Plus we do community supplies so the supplis have to be on the table as well, and when the kiddos are doing a benchmark assessment or math quick check (which is a mini asessment that we do every day after our math lesson) the kids have to use a privacy board. Oh and a bin for them to put their finished work, as well as a book bin for early finishers. That's a LOT to have on/near a table so I have been working to try to figure out how to keep all these things within easy reach and yet not overwhelming the tables. Here is what I have come up with:<br />
<br />
Workbooks - I have baskets from Really Good Stuff that fit the workbooks perfectly so I have a basket for each table and their workbooks are in the baskets - each workbook has a label on it with the student's name so they can easily find their own workbook. <br />
<br />
Finished work - I have some "flat" bins I got from Lakeshore many moons ago, so I have one of those on each table for completed work<br />
<br />
Books - I bought the skinny book bins from Lakeshore and I put one on each table with easy reader books. They look like these. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1i9bBkpRQoA/UDklubjnjhI/AAAAAAAABuM/vR39CgK7xxg/s1600/book+bins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="158" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1i9bBkpRQoA/UDklubjnjhI/AAAAAAAABuM/vR39CgK7xxg/s320/book+bins.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Supplies - I have always loved the Lakeshore Carry All Caddy with the colored cups like these:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KtBKMjpEWFs/UDklxmD4N0I/AAAAAAAABuU/Iy0qqtd1Uko/s1600/caddy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KtBKMjpEWFs/UDklxmD4N0I/AAAAAAAABuU/Iy0qqtd1Uko/s320/caddy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
But I didn't want to spend $20 each for 3 of them (1 for each table). One of my teammates said at the beginning of the summer, she found some at Michael's that were just like the Lakeshore ones (except they had 2 red, 2 blue, 2 green and 2 yellow cups instead of 8 different colored cups) but they were only $15 instead of $20. Still a little more than I wanted to spend but figured that saving $15 was better than nothing so hubby and I went to Michael's today to see if I could find them. I was getting disappointed as we walked around and around and couldn't find them. As we were about to leave I saw them! The best part was there were only 3 left - exactly how many I needed AND they were on clearance for $5!!!!!!!!! I was SO excited!! I grabbed all 3 of them. Then I got to the register and showed my teacher ID to get my 20% off and the cashier asked me if I had the latest email coupon, I said no, and she said "You're a teacher and teachers always spend their own money, I'm gonna give it to you anyway" and she gave me 40% off one of them! So I got ALL 3 of them for less than the original price of 1!! <br />
<br />
Finally, one of my teammates came up with an AWESOME and VERY inexpensive way to create chair pockets for workbooks that won't fit in the basket, and it makes a great place for my kiddos to keep their library book - Kinders aren't allowed to take librarybooks home - Check out the pictures of these GREAT chair pockets!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Close up of my "chair pocket" - Can you figure out what they are made of?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We bought the stretchy, Jumbo Book Covers for $1 each at Target and put one end over the back of the chair and the other end is the pocket! How super easy and cute are these??? They are stretchy but durable! If you are going to do this you HAVE to get the JUMBO ones (I could only find them at Target) the regular size book covers were too small. I know this because I accidentally grabbed one regular sized one instead of a jumbo one and it kept coming off the chair. <br />
<br />
So I am feeling pretty organized and the only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to store the privacy boards so they are easily gotten out and put away. Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-90483239233327043792012-07-28T16:54:00.000-07:002012-07-28T16:54:17.371-07:00Had a tough day so I made some stuffHaving a father with Alzheimer's disease is very difficult and this past 6 months it has gotten even more difficult. I knew this day was coming but it still hit me like a ton of bricks when my sweet daddy, who I see multiple times a week, looked at me on 2 separate occasions today and asked me "Who are you?"<br />
Those 3 simple words broke my heart and have been haunting me all day. When my dad was first diagnosed 7 years ago I knew this day would come, I even tried to prepare my own kids for it. My daughter, who is very close to her Grandad, was very upset with the diagnosis and I told her "Baby girl you're right Grandad will some day forget us in his brain but he will never forget us in his heart" today I had to draw on those words myself and they were really of no comfort as I cried all the way home from his nursing home, and still tear up when I think about it.<br />
<br />
So to try to take my mind off this whole thing I decided to work on things for my classroom. It was inspiring when I saw that Stephanie at <a href="http://fallingintofirst.blogspot.com/2012/07/lots-and-lots-of-owls-n-dots.html">Falling into First</a> had posted a packet that matched my classroom perfectly - Owls and polka dots! Here I am thinking I am being all original but combining owls and polka dots, turns out its a pretty popular combo this year LOL<br />
<br />
Anyway I bought her pack and downloaded it, mostly for the Word Wall Letters - Look how super cute these are!!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XvQEqKuGNKM/UBR2ZHJ-RuI/AAAAAAAABss/kkQHQjg9DNk/s1600/IMG_2121.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XvQEqKuGNKM/UBR2ZHJ-RuI/AAAAAAAABss/kkQHQjg9DNk/s400/IMG_2121.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The kit had these in pink, purple, blue, and green. I did green for vowels and blue for consonants</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /><div>
And the desk tags! They are SO cute! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oMj4fW7kVrM/UBR5W5vllpI/AAAAAAAABtY/8-ZA_zgzAVw/s1600/IMG_2122.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oMj4fW7kVrM/UBR5W5vllpI/AAAAAAAABtY/8-ZA_zgzAVw/s400/IMG_2122.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also spent some time making my "Name Necklaces" that are part of our reading program and my students use the first few days of school.<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-psuzvcfIj1Q/UBR2WAAj9AI/AAAAAAAABsg/K3NKEWnXKGU/s1600/IMG_2120.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-psuzvcfIj1Q/UBR2WAAj9AI/AAAAAAAABsg/K3NKEWnXKGU/s400/IMG_2120.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, I saw a super cute idea on<a href="http://youngkindergarten.blogspot.com/2012/07/never-tie-shoe-again.html"> Young and Lively Kindergarten</a>. She has "Tying Teachers" in her classroom. She has a display where she posts the names of the students in her class who can tie shoes, that way if you have a kiddo whose shoes are untied they know which classmates to go to for help. AND it gives them an incentive to learn to tie shoes so they can have their name on the Tying Teachers board. So I made a quick little sign and bought some cute little sneaker accents to put the kiddos' names on and I will be doing this in my classroom tis year as well.</div>

I am worried about this coming school year. 2 years ago I found myself hating my job and just being miserable and not giving it my all. I figured I was burned out after 8 straight years teaching kindergarten, and I thought I needed a grade level change. I went to my principal and told him I wanted to change grades and that I wanted to teach 4th grade. He was shocked to say the least - he was expecting me to say 1st or 2nd maybe, he never expected me to want to change to 4th grade, but he gave me the change. I taught 4th grade the past 2 years and was still not happy. This past year was the absolute worst year I have had in teaching and I actually thought it was time for me to leave the profession. My saving grace was my team. I taught with several amazing teachers and they were just as miserable as I was so that helped me feel like this wasn't just me. In April, after a member of the administrative team referred to me and my team as a "toxic group" I realized that the toxicity in my feelings about teaching were not based on a grade level assignment, they were based on the fact that, to use her words, a toxic environment. I made a very difficult decision to leave the school that I had opened 6 years ago. I was part of the opening staff, I walked through that school with a hard hat on while it was still being built. It was SO hard to send out those resumes but I had to. 3 years earlier the administration changed and the environment of the school went downhill. I rarely felt appreciated or valued and when there is no appreciation or value then why bother giving it your best. Anyway, I submitted my resume to about 25 other schools in the district that are close to my home. We are a VERY large district, there are 5 elementary school, 1 middle school, and 1 high school on the ONE road that my school was on.<br />
<br />
Anyway I sent out about 25 resumes and I received a call from the school that is just down the street from my old school, and that was built and opened the same time as my school. I had heard the principal at that school was tough, but that was the complete opposite of what I had currently and was what I need. So I went on the interview, I interviewed for a 4th grade position even though after 2 years I still felt completely out of my element in 4th grade. 2 days later - on my birthday no less - I got a phone call and the principal offered me a kindergarten position and said that if she had a 4th grade position open up she would move me up if i wanted. I said ABSOLUTELY sign me up! I started getting very excited about teaching kindergarten again and started planning for my year ahead. about 2 weeks later my new principal emailed me and said she had a 4th grade position available for me, I emailed her back and told her that I would rather stay in kinder and she said fine, the best part was that one of my teammates (from the "toxic group") was able to get the position I had turned down! Actually in total there are 5 of us moving to this one school, 3 are going to 4th grade, 1 to 3rd grade, and me in kinder. My new principal is AHHHHMAZING!!! I have felt more complimented, valued, and appreciated since being hired by my new principal in early May than I have in the past 2 and half years! I am thrilled to be working for such an amazing administrator.<br />
<br />
SO now by now you are probably wondering what I am so nervous about (as my post title suggests). Well I am nervous that I will have another awful year, what if it really is me and not the environment? What if I really am burned out? I don't feel like I am but when I think about school starting in just a couple weeks I get really nervous. Maybe I am just a bit gun-shy after the last few years I have had. I am just feeling anxious to be going back to kindergarten and being at a new school. AGGHHHH am I ready for all this again????Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-30743955601132781472012-07-25T14:30:00.001-07:002012-07-25T14:38:54.397-07:00My classroom is kid-ready!!I spent another day in my classroom today and I am amazed that I am pretty much finished with my classroom set up! I got SO much work done yesterday and today. I was SO worried since I was changing schools and changing back to kindergarten, after teaching 4th grade for the past 2 years, I just thought it would be so much to get done. Don't get me wrong it was a LOT of work but it went so easily! I am pretty much finished, I just need to put some finishing touches on once pre-planning begins. I need to put names on stuff when I get my class list. I also need to put up a hallway bulletin board of some sort. Oh well, I'll figure it out during pre-planning. Now I can relax the rest of this week. Next week I am working on a planning team, then I get one more week off before I go back.<br />
<br />
I gotta admit, I have been having some mixed emotions lately, wondering if I did the right thing... moving to a new school and moving back to kindergarten. Every once in a while I get really nervous, I start feeling like "What have I gotten myself into?" Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my new principal - she is everything my old principal was not, and I am thrilled to be teaching littles again. When my daughter taught first grade last year I was a little envious and was kind of missing the littles. Now that she is teaching Kindergarten I couldn't be more happy for both of us. It's just that I have been at my old school since we opened the school 6 years ago. I knew everyone there, I knew all the routines, procedures, and all the rules. Now I'm the "new guy" and I have no real clue what to expect. I feel like a kid getting ready to start a new school, I find myself asking "Will they like me? What if they don't? Will I know anyone? Will anyone want to be my friend?" I am glad that there are actually a total of 5 of us from my old school moving to this school. 3 of them will be teaching 4th grade (all 3 of which I taught 4th grade with the past 2 years), 1 will be teaching 3rd grade, and then little ole me, back in kindergarten :-) That helps a lot knowing that I do have friends there who are going through the same thing. Also I think being back in kindergarten is helping a lot too. I looked around my classroom today before I left and felt really good, it just felt right, I felt like it was where I was supposed to be.<br />
<br />
I'm still dreading the first day of school and I am dreading even more so, the first fire drill!! Ugghhh those are the worst at the beginning of the year! The last time I taught kindergarten my daughter had not started teaching yet and she ALWAYS came to help me out the first day of school and she would also come for the first fire drill (when we knew in advance when it would be). She was awesome, how many college kids would come in at 8am on a Monday when they were still on their summer break to help their mom with a group of crying kids and parents LOL. This year I'll be on my own and so will she! Hey, I do have my "baby" my 19 year old kinda likes hanging out in my classroom, maybe I can bribe him to come in and help me, at least on the first day. As for the fire drill, I will be practicing with my kiddos the entire first week. We usually have our first fire drill the first week of school -BOOOOOOO!-<br />
<br />
Anyway, I wanted to share some pictures of what I accomplished today - mostly decorating but that's the fun stuff right??<br />

I can not believe how much I got done today even with a broken toe. I was a little worried when I first got there because all my furniture was pushed to the front of the room and my tables (which are VERY heavy) were all up on their sides. I thought "Oh boy this is gonna be fun" But I guess the ibuprofen I took must have helped because I was able to get all my furniture in place and I was able to even get some of the decorating done too! I am going back tomorrow to try to finish up so I can enjoy the rest of this week.<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures from today<br />
<br />
Here is what it looked like when I walked in (AGGHHHHH!!)<br />

Its a fun way to just get to know each other outside of our teaching blogs so I am hopping right in. <div>

First thing I am going to tell you all is that I BROKE MY PINKY TOE AT LAKESHORE!!!! Owwwwieeeeee!!!! Well actually I didn't break it, someone else did :-( I was walking around the back of the laminator to reset the the little umber do-dad thingy and someone had let their kid push their shopping cart and when I turned back around to go back in front of the laminator he ran right into my little pinky toe! It is al swollen and black and blue and it hurts really bad (I will spare you a picture of it LOL but you can still feel sorry for me) I bet my hubby hopes this makes me leery to go back into Lakeshore for a while, but I have a feeling it will have no ill effects on my affection for Lakeshore. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, I have an AWESOME family!! My hubby and I have been married for 20 years and he totally completes me. He has made all my dreams come true. We have 3 great kids!! Our daughter, Ashley, is 24 years old and she is a brand new kindergarten teacher! Our sons are Bobby (almost 22) and Garrett (19). Bobby is going to be entering the police academy in January (scared to death but super proud), and Garrett is working towards his GED and plans to enter our local community college as soon as he can, he wants to major in art and become a tattoo artist (my rebel child but he's all mine and I love him bunches!) My sweet daddy is also a major part of my family. He lives in a nursing home nearby and he is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's Disease. I try to go see him as often as I can but it is really difficult to see him like this. The picture below was taken last Christmas. He was starting to go down hill at that point. </div>

You can probably tell in the "after" picture above that I am a huge UCF football fan! I graduated from UCF and so did my daughter. I LOVE going to the games and cheering on my school!</div>

I LOVE to shop! My favorite things to shop for are clothes and purses. I am not a big shoe person although I do own quite a few pair. I love me some Ross, TJ Maxx, and Dress Barn. Oh and I love Coach and Dooney & Bourke bags, but I also like just cute and fun purses too. </div>

Well that's all I can think of right now with this painful throbbing in my toe, so I think I will be done for now and start googling what I can do for a broken toe. Let me just say, one more time, owwwwwiiiieeeee :-( </div>

Pay attention Kindergarten teachers!I warned y'all it was coming and here it is, my 2nd post in for the day - please don't tell the bloggy police on me, I just went over 100 followers and would hate to get in bloggy trouble :-) I just HAD to post and I promise it will be short and sweet! I just finished and uploaded my Kindergarten friendly Common Core standards written in the "I can..." Marzano learning goal format. I am going to use these in my classroom with my Marzano learning goal scale (I blogged about it briefly just the other day - you can check out that post <b><a href="http://krazykinderteacher.blogspot.com/2012/07/this-is-why-i-cant-ever-have-theme.html">HERE</a></b>)<br />
<br />
Soooo anywho, I have been searching and searching and searching for Marzano/Common Core combos and found some really great things created by some really great teachers, but they were mostly created my teachers of upper grades and they were just not written in a kindergarten type of language.<br />
<br />
So I decided to undertake the task myself. I had already made my learning goal scale thought that I would create the Common Core Learning goals to match my scale. That way I can hang my scale in my classroom and then I can put the current learning goals up around the scale. I am thinking I will put this on my white board so I can just use magnetic tape on the back of the cards and that way they can just stick up and I can take them down when we move on to a new goal(s).<br />
<br />
I can't get in my room until Tuesday so I can't take actual pictures of the scale in use, but I will as soon as I can. For now here are a couple pictures of what the cards look like.<br />

Finally keep your eyes open I just might break the rules and post twice today (I know, its terrible but I don't do it very often and I think you might forgive me when you see the 2nd post LOL). You see, I have been working on creating Marzano style and Kindergarten friendly I Can... statement posters to go with the Kindergarten Common Core Standards. I am making them to match my Marzano scale that I made as well - you can see that post <a href="http://krazykinderteacher.blogspot.com/2012/07/this-is-why-i-cant-ever-have-theme.html">HERE</a> or you can see it in my TPT store <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Primar-level-Marzano-Scale">HERE</a>. I will be posting them as just the pack of I Can statements and I will be doing a bundle of the I Can statements and the scale together. Keep your eyes open be because there just might be a flash giveaway in the making! (if not today then certainly tomorrow)<br />

Yesterday I spent the day working on school stuff like ALL day long, took pictures and had every intention of posting a blog post after dinner. Well, apparently my sweet daddy had other plans. Right as I was setting the table for dinner I get a phone call from his nursing home, they tell me that my dad was found unresponsive, they did a sternum stimulation to revive him which it did, but not by much, he was still pretty out of it and unresponsive so they called 911. Thankfully the hospital is directly across the street from his nursing home. When I got to him at the ER, my sweet daddy was so confused, he has advanced Alzheimer's disease and dementia. He doesn't know who I am but he knows that I "belong" to him, when I got to his side I took hold of his hand and he held my hand and he said "don't leave, stay here with me." I told him I wasn't going anywhere I would be with him the whole time, he pointed at my husband and said "you too!" WHen he started joking we knew he would be ok. The doctors ran a series of tests and determined that my dad had another mini stroke, this makes 4 since March. There is nothing they can do about them since they are caused by a fluid build up on the brain and the fluid build up is caused by the Alzheimer's. So after 6 hours in the ER they sent him back to his nursing home and once he was resettled I was finally able to go home and sleep. Then this morning at 5am I woke up and could barely move. My back, shoulders, and neck were SO sore, can you guess where I carry my tension/stress???? So at 5am I took a muscle relaxer and fell back to sleep until almost 10:00am LOL Then around noon I started getting this strange pain in my stomach. It has lasted all day long, hubby wants to take me to the ER but I don't think its that bad. If its still hurting tomorrow I'll go to the doctor.<br />
<br />
Somehow in the mess that has been my life for the last 24 hours I was able to actually get some stuff done for my classroom. OH yeah I almost forgot! I received an email from my new principal yesterday asking me to be part of a Common Core/Marzano planning team for my new school. I felt so honored, I am BRAND NEW to this school and have been asked to be part of this team! She said she could tell by the communications we had over the summer that I was a teacher leader and she wanted me to be part of this planning team. I felt so valued! A feeling that has been long missing from my teaching career. I am so thankful and so blessed to have received the opportunity to move to this school!<br />
<br />
OK On to the good stuff. Now yesterday and today I spent a lot of time working on stuff for my classroom. I made my Retelling Rope that I found on Pinterest, I made my students' Common Core assessment folders, I made my job chart, and I was able to buy a few little things for my classroom as well. Check out my goodies!!<br />
<br />
First up is my Retelling Rope, I gotta say this was SO easy to make and it is by far one of my favorite things I have made!!! Thanks to <a href="http://www.mrsliretteslearningdetectives.com/2012/07/gettin-crafty.html">Mrs. Lirette's Learning Detectives</a> for the great idea!!<br />

That's my retelling rope! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! Not sure why I like it so much its so simple but I just do! I am SUCH a teacher geek LOL<br />
<br />
OK on to my assessment folders. I have been trying to wrap my head around this beast that is Common Core and I am a very data driven teacher. I am constantly assessing my kinders (I just love to see the growth). Now I have my data notebook (with the super cute binder cover I made) that I will keep all their formal assessments in but I wanted a way to keep track of their mastery of Common Core Standards. SO I created an assessment folder (ok actually, I made 18 of them) and I put in them a baseline reading and math assessment that I created for the very beginning of the year just to give me a very quick snapshot of where they are. The reading one has upper and lowercase letters/sounds, and the sight words that go along with our reading program. The math one has number identification, rote counting, and plane shape identification. Nothing fancy just a quick peek at where they are starting. Then I included a Common Core assessment I found on TPT. It has an assessment for each quarter!! It is GREAT!!! I showed it to my principal and she wants me to bring a copy of it to the planning meeting! The best part is its FREE!!!!! Check it out <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Common-Core-Combined-Assessment-Pack">HERE</a>. Here are my assessment folders:<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is the page I will use for their baseline - I know part of the words are covered by the brads but this is just for me, I made one that is the student view - the letters and words are a little bigger</td></tr>

OK, I also made a job chart to go with all my owl stuff! I don't call it an owl theme because my room isn't all owls, its still a "Cute" theme LOL I do my job chart a little different than most Kinder teachers. I tried doing the whole everyone-gets-a-job thing but I found that over half the jobs I had were meaningless and were never done so I decided to simplify and I now do 2 teachers helpers each day. I have 2 happy face magnets that I use. I have a chart (this year with owls) that has the kids names on it in alphabetical order (this also helps in the beginning of the year when they are learning how to line up in ABC order for lunch (I call it lunch line order). Anyway on day 1 I start with the first two kiddos on the chart, the top one is the line leader and the 2nd one is the door holder, and then they are also my messengers, paper passers, and anything else that needs to be done, for the day. Then the next morning I move the happy face magnets down ONE place, so the kiddo who was the door holder the day before now gets to be the line leader and they are the "main" helper for the day. So in essence everyone gets 2 days in a row of helping out. It also eliminates the "WHen do I get to be line leader? I never got to be line leader" conversation because, once they learn the system (and they pick it up pretty quickly) they are able to figure out for themselves when they will get to do it. If I have an absent student then I just move that happy face down 1 more, if it happens to be their day to be line leader then they get to catch it the next time around I don't go back. Anyway... here is my helper chart (warning - not my best work and it still needs to be laminated but I still like it)<br />

Finally, I am so excited that I get to start working in my room next week. The custodians will be done with the floors and carpets by Monday so anytime after Monday I can go in and get crackin' on setting up! I am super excited about it and can't wait to post before and after pictures. I can't wait to see how all these things I have been making over the summer will come together to make one super cute and inviting kindergarten classroom. I can't believe I only have 3 weeks left until preplanning begins! Next week Tues. - Thurs. I will be slaving away in my room., the following week I will be working on the planning team, and then the following week I will hopefully be finishing up my room and then I will be going to south Florida to help my baby girl (ok, she's 24 but she will always be my baby girl), set up her very first Kindergarten classroom!!!<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
OK, now on to my Tuesday DIY!! I was blog stalking this morning and saw a cute idea about ways to organize listening centers. I saw a super cute idea at<a href="http://sweetlifeofteaching.blogspot.com/2012/07/weekend-diy-stuff.html"> Sweet Life of Teaching</a> and was inspired! Its super simple, just print off the tags and hook them onto a tote bag with the book(s), CD(s), and a personal CD player. The students can then just grab a bag, find a spot and listen to reading! Now, since I am not paid during the summer (I know SHOCKER!!!) a so we are on a tight budget over the summer. That being said I really wanted to do this for my listening centers. I decided that I would go to Wal-Mart and just price the tote bags and personal CD players and then when hubby gets paid I might be able to pick up a couple.<br />
<br />
I was sad that I couldn't find ANY cute colorful tote bags that would work for what I wanted and as I was leaving the craft section the fabric section caught my eye. So I went over and was looking at the remnants they had on clearance and again that little voice in my head (just like with the cushions for the crates) said "HEY you could totally MAKE some tote bags!!"<br />
<br />
Now apparently that little voice in my head forgets that I am NOT a real crafty person. My mom used to sew up a storm and was always trying to teach me but I was just never really interested, why should I lean how to sew, you can buy pillows and clothes and all that other stuff at the store! Boy I wish I would have listened and learned. Anyway, that voice in my head, which I swear is my mom LOL, kept yelling at me that I could totally do this! So I thought "OK well I have a sewing machine and the voice WAS right about the crate cushions, I did make those and they came out SUPER cute, and besides what's a tote bag except a pillow with one end open and no stuffing, right?? LOL<br />
<br />
So I bought some really cute fabric remnants and then I thought "ugghhh tote bags have to have handles, I can't do handles" so I put the material back and was walking out of the isle when, and I SWEAR this happened (all the more reason I think the voice is my mom) my purse bumped a display a spool of large ribbon fell off the shelf, this was super cute ribbon that matched the fabric remnants perfectly!! I was putting it bad on the shelf, and admiring how cute it was when DING DING DING, I realized I could use the ribbon as the handles!!! So I went back and grabbed the fabric.<br />
<br />
I got home, pulled out my sewing machine and I am SO proud of myself because I made 2 pretty darned good tote bags!! They aren't perfect but they are cute and they will do the job! The remnant fabric I bought actually came with a total of 2 pieces of fabric so I can make 2 more bags, I need to go back and get more ribbon though because I only bought enough for 2 bags. I am so proud of myself I can't believe I made 2 tote bags! My mom would be so proud!<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures of my accomplishments!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This is an up close look at the fabric - I just love the swirls and polka dots!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The other fabric that I am going to use for the other 2 bags is really pretty too (see below) - I think I will get pink or blue ribbon for the handles although the green would be cute too, so would yellow and orange! So many options with this fabric!<br />

<br />
<br />
So that's my DIY for today! Now for my quest! I am on a quest to find 3 - 4 personal CD players for my classroom that don't cost a fortune! I went to Wal-Mart and Best Buy today and the cheapest one I found was $20!!! Back a few years you could get them for like $5 each!!! I am desperate to find these for less than $10 each! Does anyone know where I could look? I think I am going to check out Big Lots tomorrow but I am not holding out much hope since they never seem to have what I am looking for. I just want the simple little CD player with the headphones. Any ideas where to look??<br />

I am actually going to be hosting TWO after school clubs for kinders at my school. One is for littles who are struggling with letters and sounds and we will be doing an ABC club and the other is going to be called Cooking With Books. This one is the one that is proving to be by far my favorite idea but also my most challenging one as well. This club will meet once a week for 30 minutes and in that time we will read a short picture book and then make an easy snack to go along with it. I have been scouring Pinterest for ideas and have found some that are REALLY cute and easy but not nearly enough for the whole school year. SOOOOOO I thought this would make for a super fun Linky Party where we can all share some of our favorite snacks that go some of our favorite picture books!!! The only rule is that you provide the book name along with the ingredients and the directions for making the snack! That's it! If you have a picture that would be great but it is not required!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wgadmji4Rcc/UARjf9WYy_I/AAAAAAAABiI/qRr_VCEWCg4/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wgadmji4Rcc/UARjf9WYy_I/AAAAAAAABiI/qRr_VCEWCg4/s400/Slide1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
SO I will go first (obviously LOL) and share 2 of the snacks I found to be SUPER cute and easy to make.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Apple and grape cars to go with Go Dog Go</div>
<div>
-Needed for each child</div>
<div>
1 apple wedge</div>
<div>
2 grapes</div>
<div>
2 toothpicks</div>
<div>
plastic knife (depending on the age of the children)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Directions: Either you or the child can cut the the grapes in half, to make the four tires, then they simply push the toothpicks through the apple at the front and back and stick a half of a grape on each side of the toothpick and there you have it! </div>
<div>
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Striped Hats to go with The Cat in the Hat</div>
<div>
- Needed for each child</div>
<div>
1 Oreo cookie (Double Stuff work the best)</div>
<div>
3 Red Lifesaver gummies</div>
<div>
1 plastic knife</div>
<div>
*you also need 1 carton of white frosting, each child will get a small scoop to use. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Directions: Have the students open up the Oreo cookie, they will use the side with the creme as the base. The child will place one of the gummies on the Oreo, then they will use the plastic knife to put a small amount of white frosting on top of the gummie, then place another gummie on the frosting and repeat the saw step for the third gummie. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

Thanks to Stephanie over at <a href="http://mamagooseskindergarden.blogspot.com/">MaMa Goose's KinderGarden</a> (go check her out!!!!) I have volunteered to do TWO clubs for kinders! I am going to do an ABC Club where we will do a craft each week based on a different letter sound each week. AND I am doing, what I think is going to be a BIG hit (thank you Stephanie for such an awesome idea!!!!) Cooking with Books club!!! I am going to do a read aloud and then have the kids make a simple snack that goes along with the book. In order to tie it in to the Common Core standards, nonfiction reading, and text features, I am going to make a "recipe card" for each student to use as they assemble their snack. Then I will keep those recipe cards and (as per Stephanie's idea) make them into a "cook book" that the child gets at the end of the year! So now what I am trying to find are super easy snacks to make and books that correlate with them so if you would like to share any ideas or pins from Pinterest that would work for this I would really appreciate it!!<br />
<br />
I was asked about my organizational binder and thought I would answer here. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures but I can describe my binder. I use a 1.5" binder, in the front I put a zipper pencil pouch for money and small notes. My school provides us with a folder and a planner to put in the binder. They go right behind the zipper pouch. The folder has 2 pockets, one labeled "Send back to school" and one labeled ""Keep at Home." I use the planner to write notes to parents and I use it to let the parents know how their child had behaved that day (I use a happy, straight, or sad face). Then behind the folder and the agenda, there is a pocket divider for homework. FInally in the very back there is a section for resources. I put a copy of sight words and anything else I feel might be needed for review or practice at home.<br />
<br />
Next up, as I mentioned in my last post have become OBSESSED with cute little owls! I posted pictures of my OWL Book cover and my table signs, then last night I created my reading rotation cards and the pieces that I am going to put outside my room welcoming my class to my room!<br />
<br />
Check them out!!<br />
<br />
Here are a couple of my rotation cards:<br />

<br /></div>
I'm not real sure I love the "banner" graphics yet, I feel like they are too redundant so I may have to change them up a little.<br />
<br />
<br />
Finally I am linking up with Mr. B's Beach Brains for his Teacher's Inky Linky. Its a linky party all about... teacher's tattoos {gasp} LOL<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mrbsbeachbrains.blogspot.com/2012/07/teachers-inky-linky.html"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PSL88SA5FdQ/UAHh8TfgYhI/AAAAAAAABhQ/tqtXyjDUuyI/s320/Inky+Linky.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Tattoos aren't as taboo as they have been in the past and even though for years and years I said I wouldn't get one I did. As you can see in the picture mine is a yellow rose with a black banner that says "La Belle Vie" which is French for "A Beautiful Life"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T-d92PYFes8/UAHh9XkKjQI/AAAAAAAABhY/2ncdBBv1LYc/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T-d92PYFes8/UAHh9XkKjQI/AAAAAAAABhY/2ncdBBv1LYc/s400/photo.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
I got mine in memory of my mom who passed away at the very young age of 54 years old. I was only 23 when I lost her and I had just begun to realize what an amazing woman she was. My mother's favorite flower was the yellow rose, she always said "I would rather have a single yellow rose than a dozen red ones" so in the 20 years that my mom has not been with us the yellow rose has become our family symbol for her. Every major family event, graduations, weddings, births, etc a yellow rose is always included. All 4 of the girls in our family (we are a very boy heavy family) has a tattoo of a yellow rose. My sister and her daughter have a single yellow rose on their shoulders, my daughter has a yellow rose, and a pink rose (which is my favorite flower) on her foot, and mine is on my lower left leg. I am going to get one more and then I am finished. My son is preparing himself to become a tattoo artist and he has designed my next one, it is a dream catcher with a yellow rose blooming through the middle. My father is in a nursing home and he is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer, so this tattoo is to honor his Native American heritage, which he was always very proud of, and in memory of my mother. Here is a rough sketch he drew up for me:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7s3iDrdA10k/UAHj5Fmo-YI/AAAAAAAABhg/Oo80OWly0XQ/s1600/photo+copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7s3iDrdA10k/UAHj5Fmo-YI/AAAAAAAABhg/Oo80OWly0XQ/s400/photo+copy.JPG" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Ok now it's your turn to link your ink! but there are a few ground rules:<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Unkempt; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px;">1. Please use good judgment when posting pictures of your tat. If it's in a place where we have no business looking at it, then please don't. If it contains profanity or other vulgarities, please do not post it. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Unkempt; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px;"><br /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Unkempt; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px;"><br /></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Unkempt; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px;">2. Please DO share your pic and story as to why you got it and what it symbolizes.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Unkempt; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Unkempt; font-size: 18px; line-height: 24px;"><br /></span>Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-83863016929900162242012-07-13T16:50:00.002-07:002012-07-13T16:50:47.774-07:00I need some ideas, oh and I have become obsessed with owls!Well I am going to start off backwards from my title and discuss my recent owl obsession. OK since I bought the two cute owl rugs from target (You can see the post and pics <a href="http://krazykinderteacher.blogspot.com/2012/07/this-is-why-i-cant-ever-have-theme.html">HERE</a>) I have seen SO many cute owl things! Then of course I open up my email today and get my Scrappin' Doodles weekly email and what do I see?? They now have some super cute owl graphics!! So I had to grab them and then I started making stuff. Unfortunately I ran out of ink (which ticks me off because I JUST bought new ink today - I need a better printer but that's a whole other post topic). Anyway I made some owl themed table signs and I made an organization binder cover and instead of GO books I am going to have OWL books and my awesome daughter came up with the acronym "Organized While Learning" which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. I also found a super cute owl classroom theme on TPT that has some cute owl themed name plates and a bunch of other stuff. I am not changing everything to owls but I am going to incorporate them into my "Cute" theme, since they are SO doggone cute! I am currently working on making owl themed reading rotation cards too. I haven't made them yet but will be working on them soon.<br />
<br />
Anyway, here is what I have come up with so far:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bz68KV__KZc/UACyfCWgUBI/AAAAAAAABeg/oIzNfoAFa5o/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bz68KV__KZc/UACyfCWgUBI/AAAAAAAABeg/oIzNfoAFa5o/s400/Slide1.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My OWL book cover</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YM9CRdcraJ0/UACyvbajB0I/AAAAAAAABeo/ANzaLC7-2f4/s1600/IMG_2017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YM9CRdcraJ0/UACyvbajB0I/AAAAAAAABeo/ANzaLC7-2f4/s400/IMG_2017.jpg" width="298" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My table signs. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Ok now for what I need help with. I four out today that my school is doing a sort of tutoring program for all grade levels BUT they aren't calling it a tutoring program, they are calling them clubs and my principal wants every teacher to participate once a week and have a 30 minute before or after school club. The teacher gets to choose which grade level they want to work with and they get to choose the type of "club" they want to have. They want it to be a FUN 30 minutes that also has the kids learning (obviously). The suggestions were like a book club, learning games, or a smart board activity club (the upper grades have smart boards). So I want to do a Kinder or 1st grade club for either reading or math but I can't think of anything super cute and fun to do for my club. I don't want to get stud with a boring club so I was wondering if you awesome bloggy friends could give me some ideas for a fun kinder/1st grade club that would be a great way for kids to receive enrichment or remediation.Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-25950259880955253332012-07-12T17:55:00.000-07:002012-07-12T17:55:06.076-07:00SO Excited!!!OMG I am SO excited!!! My baby girl (ok she's 24 years old but she will always be my baby girl) received a job offer today for a kindergarten position!!! She will be in her 2nd year of teaching and her and I will be teaching the same grade level!!!! I am SOOOOOO super psyched about this!! She is such an awesome beginning teacher and I can't wait to share ideas with her. She got to see her classroom today and she called and was saying "Mom, it's SO big!!" LOL her 1st grade classroom at her school last year, was really tiny so we had to get really creative in setting u her room. She said "You are going to have to come down again and help me set up because its so big and it's kindergarten, I don't know how to set up a kindergarten classroom" She did her student teaching in 1st grade, then when she moved she taught pre-k at a preschool, then last year she taught 1st grade at K-8 school. She is SO excited too. She would have liked 1st grade again because she has more experience but she also has her momma who has taught kindergarten for 9 years.<br />
<br />
Ok another thing I am excited about is this giveaway!! Mrs. I's class is having a giveaway! She is giving away DeeDee Willis' complete writing workshop set!! I really want to keep this to myself because I really want to win but I figured I would be sweet and share it with you all! Head on over to her blog and check it out! OH and hurry because it ends tonight!!! <a href="http://mrsisclass.blogspot.com/2012/07/time-for-giveaway.html">http://mrsisclass.blogspot.com/2012/07/time-for-giveaway.html</a><br />

I decided to pop in and see if they had anything different than the one I went to on Monday. I found some cute stuff! Check it out!<br />

Then today I am at Target and what do I see but these absolutely adorable owl rugs!! They will look SO cute in my reading area!! Now I am totally wishing I would have gone with the owl theme LOL I am SO wishy washy when it comes to my classroom decor. That's why I just go with cute! I can never limit myself to just one type of cute!! OK so how cute are these rugs???? They were in the Dollar Spot but they were $3 each, still a great deal!!<br />
<br />
On a final note, I have added 3 new files to my TPT store<br />
<br />
I uploaded the Marzano Scale I plan to use in my classroom pictured below - Click the picture to take you straight to that page in my TPT store<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So if you don't want to read the boring stuff about my crazy life right now then just skip on down to the paragraph with the pictures! I'll meet you down there. If you are a glutton for punishment and want to read all about the craziness that is my life then read on...<br />
<br />
For the past week and a half I have had daily horrible, miserable, headaches. I am subject to occasional migraines and I have medication for those but I don't get them very often, I have had like 5 in the last 3 years. So when it all first began I thought it was the beginning of a migraine, I took my meds and laid down for a little while, which is usually all it takes, if I catch it soon enough. Well this did not help, the headaches got worse and would last all day long. I would literally wake up in the morning with a headache and it would persist all day long, it would subside some but it was always there. Finally, yesterday was the worst and my husband made me go to urgent care to find out what is going on. I expected it to be a sinus issue but after asking me all sorts of questions and checking me out the doctor diagnosed me with Severe Tension headache brought on by stress. He gave me a shot in the backside to relieve the pain and basically said that when I lose the stress I will lose the headache. Yeah well easier said than done, especially since the stress is coming from the fact that my sweet daddy is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's and dementia, back in March he fell down the stairs at his home and broke his hip. He had to go into a skilled nursing facility for rehab and it was during all this that we (my brother, sister, and I) found out how much his AD had progressed and we found out that his wife (not my mother) had not been properly caring for him. So we made a decision that he would need to be placed into a nursing home on a permanent basis. This was a very difficult decision to make especially because my dad never wanted to be in a nursing home. I am very close to my dad so my life has been turned on its ear since March. Originally he was in a nursing home facility about an hour and half away from me but since I am his medical power of attorney we decided it was best to move him to a facility closer to me. I thought this would relieve some of the stress but it hasn't. I go see my dad almost every day and when I don't go I feel guilty. I have seen how quickly my dad's condition is deteriorating and it breaks my heart. Since March 16th my entire life has revolved around being there for my dad and it has caused a great deal of stress which has manifested itself into this brain splitting headaches. It has also caused me to gain back about 7 of the 32 pounds I have lost so I figured I need to do something that will help with both things. I usually get my exercise by walking on the treadmill, but with this horrible headache walking on the treadmill is torture. So I did some research and found out that tension headaches are caused by stress in that when you are stressed you tense up the muscles in your neck and shoulders. The neck muscles are connected directly to the muscle that runs over the top of your head and that is what causes the headaches - which is why my migraine meds made no dent in the pain. So several websites suggested Yoga as a way to not only stretch out those muscles but also as a stress relief and a form of exercise! So I went to my very first yoga class today! I LOVED it and the best part is I have been almost headache free all day long! I can't wait to go back again! I think I am going to try to do it 3 times a week.<br />
<br />
After my yoga class I decided that what I also really needed was some "me" time, so I made the difficult decision to not go see my dad today (and as my sister said "he really doesn't know if you come or not") and I decided that I was going to spend the day doing what I like to do. So I went and had a nice healthy lunch all by myself, and then I went and did some shopping for my classroom! I have had a few pangs of guilt throughout the day about not going to see my dad but I know that if he were to all of a sudden be healed tomorrow he would not be angry or upset with me for not being there every single day, he would actually get after me for not taking better care of myself. Although I will go see him tomorrow, I know that once school starts back up again I won't be able to go every day so I need to start weaning myself to like every other day. Anyway, after spending my yoga class and then my shopping trip I have felt so much better today! I am so glad I did it.<br />
<br />
<br />
Now onto the good stuff! As I said I spent some time today shopping for my classroom and I also spent some time making some stuff too! I hit the jackpot at Dollar Tree and Target! I am so excited about the stuff I got! Check out my haul for today!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I also decided to make my clip chart.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have used a clip chart for the past 2 years in 4th grade and I have LOVED it. When I moved back to kinder I was afraid it would be too "mature." So I had to revamp it. I know in this picture the orange and yellow are backwards but I fixed it before I connect it all together. I am taking it to be laminated tomorrow. At the top it says "I am a shining star", then it says "I am making great choices", then "I am ready to learn", then "I need to think about my choices", then "I need to fix my day", and finally "Parent Contact." Since I use their daily agenda to communicate their behavior each day with either a happy, straight, or sad face I decided to incorporate that into my clip chart. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jawy9oAzQx8/T_tn5XQltSI/AAAAAAAABcs/9bRP-L3sXS4/s1600/IMG_1997.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jawy9oAzQx8/T_tn5XQltSI/AAAAAAAABcs/9bRP-L3sXS4/s400/IMG_1997.jpg" width="298" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Marzano scale</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My state has recently adopted the Marzano teacher evaluation model and part of the model is the use of scales in the classroom. In 4th grade this was a much more detailed event and we had to have them for each topic with a description of what each number on the scale would represent. In kindergarten it is a little easier, I made this scale that goes from 0 - 4. 0 = I am trying but I still don't get it, 1 = I need help, 2 = I need some more practice, 3 = I get it, 4 = I get it and I can help a friend. What we have to do is use this scale throughout our lesson and have the kids tell us where they are on the scale in reference to their understanding of the lesson. We do this in Kinder with a simple showing of fingers. We are supposed to have our scale visible as well as our learning goals and essential questions. My plan is to hang this up and then hang up the Marzano and Common Core inspired<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kindergarten-Common-Core-Essential-Questions-Learning-Goals-Marzano"> Essential Questions and Learning Goals</a> by Katie Jones that go with what we are working on at that time next to this scale.<br />
<br />
Finally, the last thing I did today was to think ahead LOL novel idea I know! As we count out the days in school when we get to a "tens" day I always chose 1 child in my class to be Zero The Hero, that child gets to make a headband that identifies them as Zero the Hero and they get to spend a few minutes in the morning decorating their headband with stickers. I usually start out pretty good and write out "Zero the Hero" on the headband the day before or the morning of but as the year goes on those doggone "10's" days sneak up on me and I would always find myself scrambling to get a headband ready while conducting my calendar routine so today I pulled out 17 sentence strips (We don't do it on the last day of school) and I got them all ready so now all I have to do is remember where I put them when the time comes!<br />

OK Well after thinking about it a lot and getting some great a advice from my bloggy buddies, I decided that I am going to stick with my idea of Bright and Colorful (aka That's cute and I want it) for my classroom theme. I figure "cute" has worked for me for going on 13 years and I have received many compliments on my classroom over the past years so I must be doing something right. So to "celebrate" my decision I am linking up with Surfing Through Second Grade and her classroom theme link party!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I have posted some things that I have already made for my classroom but I am going to repost the pictures here again to be in the spirit of the linky!<br />
<br />
First off, something new.... I decided to make signs to hang over my tables. I think they came out SO cute!<br />

I have been sick most of the day today so I didn't make it to Joann's to get the stuff to make my Welcome sign to go on my classroom door so I am hoping to get to that tomorrow. Well, that's all I have for today. I can't get into my classroom to start actually decorating until the beginning of August but I am exited to see how this, and some of the pre made stuff I bought all tie in together.Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-12234831315405463242012-07-07T19:59:00.002-07:002012-07-07T19:59:16.076-07:00Shhhh, I'm breaking the rules please don't tell on meOK, so I know I am breaking the unwritten rule of not blogging more than once in a day but I need some ideas, and since I have been sick and sleeping most of the afternoon I can't sleep now.<br />
<br />
OK if you are reading this standing up, you might want to sit down because I am about to shock you! I have been teaching for going on 13 years and have NEVER been successful at having a classroom theme! I always try to find one I really like and then I can never find everything I need for it so I give up and I just say "My theme this year is 'cute' deal with it" LOL<br />
<br />
Well now than I am learning how to be more crafty both on and off the computer I am thinking I may be a little more successful. Now for the problem, I have NO idea what theme I want to do. I was going to go with "Bright and Colorful" but, let's face it, that's just a fancier way of saying "my theme this year is 'cute' deal with it"<br />
<br />
I have been blog stalking and have found some ideas but none of them jumped out at me. I LOVE the colors pink, purple, green,and brown so does anyone out there have any ideas (and/or pinterest resources) that you could share with me that would allow me to come up with a super cute theme using those colors?? Any and all ideas are welcome and appreciated!Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-8522105400568944422012-07-07T17:44:00.004-07:002012-07-07T17:44:32.557-07:00A Face-Lift and a Freak-OutToday has been an interesting day for me. This will be a short post because I do not feel well today First off how do you like my new look?? I don't have the $$ to get a custom designed bloggy layout so I have to play around withe free ones for now. I like it and I hope you all do too!<br />
<br />
I learned something very important about myself today, I am NOT an ocean boat person! My daughter and her boyfriend live in south Florida and they are big into ocean fishing. They have a boat, and they invited my husband and I to come down and go out on the boat with them to go fishing. All was going well as we slowly made our way through inlet, as we left the inlet and my son-in-love gave the boat more throttle and we began to go a little faster I got a little nervous, as we exited the inlet into the ocean the waves (which were SUPPOSED to be 1' - 2' at a 10 second interval and a light chop) turned into 3 - 4 foot waves with like a half second interval and a VERY heavy chop. Now, I have never been on a small fishing boat in this type of environment before (cruise ships and big deep sea fishing boats are my wheel-house) soooooo I proceeded to absolutely freak out!!!! I had my very first ever panic attack. I was totally freaking out and felt like I couldn't breath. I have never had a panic attack before so that made it even worse. My son-in-love turned us around and took us back to the inter-coastal waterway which was much calmer but there were no fish. I felt horrible for ruining everyone's day. On top of it all I am not feeling well tonight and I have a paper to do for my Master's program. So now that I am done with my "whine" and cheese fest I will now leave the bloggy world and head to work on my paper.Cindy Foremanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10785473141692142785noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5716537202194344517.post-2294526228338519732012-07-06T07:04:00.002-07:002012-07-06T07:04:46.286-07:00I feel so honored! <li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I was born and raised in Orlando, Florida and have never lived anywhere else.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I have been married to my awesome (most of the time) husband for 20 years and we have 4 great kiddos; our daughter Ashley is 24 (and she is a first grade teacher), our boys Bobby and Garrett are 21 and 19, and my step daughter Caroline is 27 (and she not only teaches pre-k but she is also the director of the pre-school) Caroline is the mommy of my sweet step-granddaughters 7 year old Kaelie and 4 year old Kayden</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I am about to begin my 13 year teaching. I have taught 2 years of 3rd grade, 2 years of 4th grade, and getting ready to start my 9th year of kindergarten (where my heart lives)</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I am a HUGE college football fan! I LOVE watching my UCF Knights play both on TV and in person!</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I LOVE to shop! I love to shop for clothes and purses and for my classroom.</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I recently bought a sewing machine and have been learning how to sew! I have made 4 cushions to use in my classroom as well as a seat cushion and back cushion for my classroom rocking chair. So far I haven't managed much except for square or rectangular cushions but hey I'm learning!</span></li>
<li><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I didn't graduate high school, I dropped out at the end of my junior year (I was an idiot), but I got my GED right afterwards. Now I have a Bachelor's Degree, National Board Certification, a Master's Degree, and I am working on a 2nd Master's degree so I am living proof that you can do anything you set out to do no matter what stupid choices you have made in the past.</span></li>
